    Ask a good question

Outcome: questions that return a decision, not a summary.

SIGNLD answers from your Knowledge Graph, so precision in the question mostly means naming three things: the metric, the window, and the grouping.

    Steps

    1. 1

      Name the metric

Use the metric that exists in the Topic, for example gross margin rather than profit.

    2. 2

      Bound the time window

Say last month, this quarter to date, or trailing 13 weeks. Undefined windows produce defensible but unhelpful answers.

    3. 3

      State the grouping

By location, by customer, by technician, by product line. Grouping is what turns a number into an action.

    4. 4

      Ask why, not just what

Ask which customers drove the change rather than what revenue was, and you get a cause instead of a total.

    5. 5

      Check confidence and sources

If confidence is low, look at which sources are missing before rephrasing.

    6. 6

      Promote the useful ones

A question you ask every week belongs in a Topic rule or a Risk Alert.

    Examples

    WeakStronger
How are we doing? How did gross margin move by location last month versus the prior month?
Why is cash tight?Which customers are past terms this month, and what is the total exposure by owner?
Is churn bad?Which accounts reduced spend more than 20 percent in the trailing 90 days, grouped by segment?
Show revenueWhich five customers drove the change in net revenue this quarter, and by how much?

    Tip

If two people get different answers to the same question, the fix is a metric definition in the Topic, not a better prompt.
